Local officials lift evacuations as firefighters gain containment

Current Situation: A combination of persistent work by firefighters and wet weather allowed fire managers to increase containment to 44%. Douglas Mountain Road to Tiffany Trail, Sarasapkin Creek to Wickiup Creek, and Cecile Creek to the South Fork of Toats Coulee Creek on the west side of the fire are now contained. The increased containment prompted Okanogan County Emergency Management to lift all Level 3 evacuations.

Despite these changes, incident management team officials say much work remains mopping up heat that persists in burned out stump holes across many areas of the fire perimeter.

More wet weather prevented heavy equipment from working on dozer line repair yesterday. Heavy equipment operators mostly stayed on the main roads to not create additional damage and ruts on soft wet dozer lines. Crews worked with chippers to remove cut brush from Toats Coulee Road on the west side of Tillman Mountain.

Firefighters also searched for any remaining heat in Cecile Creek area and were able to call many sections of that line contained. Hotshots reported no additional growth on the spot fire on Goodenough Peak. Salvage logging operations continued on the southwest side of the fire near Forest Road 200 and 100.

A hotshot crew will be shuttled by helicopter into the rugged remote area on Goodenough Peak today. They will be supported by a wilderness medical team using UTVs on an old snowmobile trail to access the spot fire. Once inserted into this rugged terrain, crews will begin building fireline and cooling down hotspots.

On the Nine Mile Road and areas around Washburn Lake, heavy equipment operators will assess if dozer lines are dry enough today to resume repair work including removing dirt berms, building water bars and pulling brush on top of the lines to prevent erosion. Near the Iron Gate trailhead and across the rest of the western side of the fire, crews will continue mopping up any remaining heat as things begin to dry out.

Weather: Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers. Some thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain cooler in the 60s and 70s. Sunday and Monday will be warmer and drier.

Gusty winds increase fire activity on northwest side of the fire

Current Situation: Fire activity increased along the head of the fire, southeast of Goodenough Peak on Wednesday. Despite the widespread moisture, this area remained warm and dry, resulting in persistent heat. As the cold front moved in yesterday afternoon, winds picked up, increasing fire activity and pushed the fire into rocky terrain.

Firefighters ordered an Air Attack platform along with Scoopers and helicopters to support ground resources in holding the fire on a ridge line. Two hotshot crews are working their way into the difficult, rugged terrain to begin building containment line. Additional resources, including a Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team will be moved from other areas of the fire to support the hotshot crews.

REMS teams are mobile, advanced medical units to support hand crews and hotshot crews working in treacherous terrain.

Across the rest of the fire, resources are repairing dozer lines and chipping brush up to Baldy Pass. On the southwest side, near Isabel Creek, crews are mopping up and backhauling hose from fire suppression activities. On the west side, crews are chipping more brush along dozer lines and access roads.

The chipping operations help reduce leftover debris post-fire, prevent fuel buildup, and improve road access. In the Iron Gate-area on the northwest side in the Pasayten Wilderness, crews continue securing containment lines and mopping up along the fire’s edge.

Weather: Showers and much cooler weather settle into the area Thursday with a 10% chance of a thunderstorm. There will be lighter winds, and it will remain cool and moist at least into Saturday with daily expectation for a few mountain showers.

Evacuation zones near Conconully were split to allow some areas to be reduced to Level 2.

Over the last few days, strong winds have stirred up ash and debris from fire-affected areas across the county, creating what may look like black smoke and causing dangerously poor visibility.

If you encounter an ash “storm”:

• Take shelter indoors if possible.

• Avoid breathing the dust and ash. Keep windows and doors closed and use appropriate respiratory protection if you must be outside.

• If you are driving and visibility becomes poor, slow down and pull completely off the roadway when it is safe to do so.

• Do not stop in the roadway.

Stay alert, avoid exposure to blowing ash, and use extra caution when traveling through affected areas.

Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to take action if conditions change.

Situation: Several areas of the incident remain active, and crews are working with both direct and indirect tactics to build and strengthen containment lines. Fire behavior is unusually intense for early August, as fuels that are typically unreceptive this time of year are burning with late-season conditions. These operations are aimed at slowing the fire’s spread and reducing threats to nearby communities and infrastructure.

As evacuation orders continue to be reduced, we ask the public to drive carefully and remain alert for any last-minute road closures or traffic delays. Join us today for a Community Meeting at the Old Community Hall in Conconully tonight at 7:00 p. m.

Fire is very active near the South Pine Creek area, pushing south and west. Currently the fire is on the north side of South Pine Creek road.

State Route 97 is OPEN. For current status of State Routes go to wsdot.gov.

Conconully is currently NOT under any evacuation.

Several roads are closed in the area of the fire and are manned by Law Enforcement.

Two shelters are currently OPEN, Community Cultural Center, 411 S Western Ave, Tonasket and Omak Community Center - 601 Benton Street, Omak, WA.

Air Quality is considered UNHEALTHY. Limit outdoor activity, stay indoors as much as possible.

Okanogan PUD has a limited number of customers without power. Main transmission lines or energized.

Current Conditions: Afternoon and evening winds increased fire activity and erratic spotting, resulting in rapid fire growth to the north. The fire advanced over Gold Hill to the edge of Loomis, prompting Level 3 evacuations, while continued fire growth along the eastern rim of the Sinlahekin Valley brought the fire to approximately one mile south of Loomis. Fire growth also continued north through the Sinlahekin Creek drainage.

Throughout the day, firefighters focused on structure assessment, preparation, and point protection while continuing construction of both direct and indirect dozer lines along the fire's flanks. Crews concentrated their efforts where containment opportunities offered the greatest chance of success and where homes, infrastructure, and other values were most at risk.

Over the past several days, fire activity has consistently increased during the afternoon as winds strengthen and humidity decreases, producing more active fire behavior and long-range spotting. Forecasted southeast winds today are expected to continue challenging suppression efforts and may support additional fire growth to the north and northwest.

Fire Strategy: Structure preparation and protection remain the highest priorities. Firefighters will continue constructing containment lines where they have the greatest likelihood of success while protecting homes, critical infrastructure—including the communications tower on Aeneas Mountain—and other values at risk.

Today, crews will continue evaluating and preparing structures ahead of potential fire progression while strengthening containment lines. Firefighters are also evaluating Toats Coulee Road as a potential containment feature should the fire continue expanding north. Crews will continue using natural terrain features, existing roads, and previous burn scars to help slow fire spread where conditions allow.

As conditions change throughout the day, firefighters will continue adapting tactics and repositioning resources to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

Weather: Northeast winds are expected through the morning before shifting to the southeast around 10:00 a.m. with gusts up to 18 mph.

A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

Evacuations: Level 3 evacuations are in effect between Blue Lake and Loomis. Recreation areas in the Toats Coulee and Chopaka Lake areas are closed and at level 3. Level 2 evacuations are in effect for South Palmer Lake, west of Wannacut Lake, Horse Springs Coulee, and Spectacle Lake area.

Evacuation areas are expected to rapidly change this afternoon.

Sinlahekin Road and Toats Coulee Roads are Closed. Loomis-Oroville Road is closed at Horse Springs Coulee. Forest Service Road 3810 at NF-38 is also closed.

Sinlahekin Fire was very active last night (7/30) advancing north onto Gold Hill, through the Sinlahekin Valley and Aeneas Mountain towards Loomis.

All current evacuation levels remain the same.

Oroville-Loomis Road is CLOSED at Horse Spring Coulee Road and Toats Coulee Road.

A Shelter for residents displaced by the Sinlahekin Fire has been set up at the Community Cultural Center, 411 Western Ave, Tonasket, WA 98855.

RV's and livestock can go to the Tonasket Rodeo Grounds.

Current Conditions: Yesterday afternoon, the fire spotted north over Sarsapkin Creek progressing towards the Conners Lake area. In the evening, the fire spotted across Blue Lake and progressed towards Lemanasky Road. Due to increased fire behavior, continued wind-driven fire spread, and the potential for additional fire growth, evacuation levels have been increased in affected areas.

Yesterday afternoon, strong southerly winds pushed the fire north across Sarsapkin Creek and Douglas Mountain Road, advancing approximately two miles within 2-3 hours toward the Conners Lake area. As winds shifted out of the west later in the evening, the fire turned east toward Sinlahekin Road. Firefighters used Sinlahekin Road as a primary control feature while conducting burnout operations to strengthen containment lines and engaging spot fires that crossed the road.

Later in the evening, the fire spotted across Blue Lake and established on the eastern cliffs, threatening structures near Lemanasky Road. A Type 1 helicopter, working in coordination with ground crews, supported structure protection efforts and attempted to contain the spot fire. Local fire districts also responded with engines and a dozer to assist with structure protection.

Fire Strategy: Structure protection in the Lemanasky Road area and Cecil Creek area are the highest priorities. Crews will also work to contain the fire at the Twin Peak Road and are evaluating opportunities to stop forward progression near Conners Lake. Crews will continue constructing dozer lines along Blue Goat Ridge in attempts to stop progression of the fire to the south.

Crews will continue evaluating opportunities to hold the fire near Conners Lake and Twin Peaks while constructing and strengthening containment lines. Fire operations are also evaluating containment features established during the 2015 Lime Belt Fire and the 2021 Chickadee Creek Fire for opportunities to reestablish and strengthen existing control lines. Construction of dozer line along Blue Goat Ridge will continue in an effort to slow southern fire progression.

Additional crews and heavy equipment, including dozers, excavators, feller-bunchers, water tenders, and engines, continue to arrive and engage the fire.

Weather: Northeast winds of 6 to 10 mph are expected through the morning, shifting to 7 to 11 mph after 1:00 p. m. Warm, dry conditions will persist through Wednesday and Thursday, with relative humidity dropping into the low to mid-teens each afternoon.

These conditions are expected to support increased fire activity throughout the day.

Evacuations: Level 3 evacuations are in effect between Blue Lake and Lemanasky Road and for residences and recreational cabins along Cecil Creek Road to Fish Lake. Level 2 evacuations are in effect for Toats Coulee, Gold Hill, Loomis, and the Pine Creek area. Sinlahekin Road remains closed between Cecil Creek Road and Fish Lake Road.

Forest Service Road 3810 at NF-38 is also closed.
